THE SIMS

Life in a video game.

150 million people around the world have a version of The Sims video game. Will it be top of your Christmas list this year?

*The father of the SIMS...is a man called Will Wright. In 1989, he created a game called SimCity. In the game, players could buid and control an entire city. Two years later, he had another idea. This time, his game was about people. This "simulation" of life was called The Sims.

*A SIMple idea
Will Wright's inspiration for the Sims came when a fire destroyed his home in 1991. He had to start his life again with no possessions. "What do you buy first?" Will says. "You get a toothbrush and underwear, then a place to stay, later a new car...
In Wright's new game, The Sims, it was possible for players to make their own houses and fill them with cool possessions like televisions and swimming pools. Wright called it his digital "dollhouse".

*What is the SIMS' secret?
When The Sims first came out in 2000, it sold then million copies in its first week! Today it is sold in 60 countries and in 22 languages.
The Sims' secret ingredient is that it is based on reality. Players control their Sims and make them do all the things that we do: eat, drink, go to the toilet, sleep, get jobs and have families.

*Making the SIMS game
To make the game, developers take videos of actors and animate them in a computer. So everything you see in the game comes from human! Developers also use artificial intelligence to make the Sims unpredictable...so Sims can make independent decisions. Players also see that when their Sims make more friends, they are happier. But like in real life, there are disputes too!

*Personalize your SIM
There are six different age groups for Sims, including baby, teenager and adult. Players can choose their Sim's hairstyle, colour and clothes...and the results can be very funny!

WRITE AN ESSAY:

WHAT ARE MY DREAMS? (Present Simple, Present Continuos, Past Simple and Past Continuos)

I have three dreams: Moved to l'Estartit and got up every day watching the sea
go to the Riding Olympics games and being a good lawyer.

Three years ago I was riding in the hipica of l'Estartit and I stin do it. I love l'Estartit, it's my favourite place. When I go to l'Estartit, I love walking to the beach, riding my horse, etc. I have a lot of friends there, and I talk to them every day. Everyone goes to Sant Gabriel School and when I go there I will go.

It's very difficult to go to Olympic games but I can do it. I must have a good horse ready to go and then I must train a lot, a lot of hours with this horse, going to compete in a many differents places because the people know who you are and then, after many years, maybe we can do it.

Since I was little, I wanted be a famous lawyer. My plan is to go to a good University to study, then go to America or somewhere where they speak English for practise. After having many clients so they can talk about my services. And slowly, everyone will know who I am.

SPEAKING 3:

Elena: A barbacue was a great idea, Laia.

Laia: Yes, thanks. I'm looking forward to it.

Elena: Have we got everything?

Laia: Well, we've got enough food, but there isn't much to drink.

Elena: Shall I get a few cartons of juice or something? There's a shop near here.

Laia: Would you mind?

Elena: No, that's fine.

Laia: Thanks, Elena. Could you get a bag of ice too? And we need a bag for the rubbish.

Elena: OK, no problem. I'll see what they've got.
SPEAKING 2:

Laia: Hi, Elena. Did you go out last night?

Elena: No, I stayed in and watched TV.

Laia: Oh? What was on?

Elena: That new talent show on Channel 5.

Laia: Oh, yes? Was it any good?

Elena: Yes, it was brilliant. There was an amazing singer on it. Didn't you see it?

Laia: No, I missed it. I was playing football.

Elena: You hsould try to watch it next time. It's really good.

Laia: OK then, I will.
